About the blog
A blog about:
I'm a young (I am young, right?) woman living in the pine forests of east Texas. I made the cutoff to be called a millenial, but only by a couple of years, it seems. I straddle the line of millenial and... what was right before us?...Generation X? My husband, at any rate, is a baby boomer. We were married in late 2014 and after the first year I'm pleased to say the shocked reactions of those who thought we were father and daughter finally began to wane.
We live on our own little wildlife management area: 20+ acres of undeveloped, densely forested land on which we maintain wildlife habitats and basically keep up a nature preserve for our great county. When I moved here on my own several years back, it was just my three dogs and me. I'm not sure if my husband fell in love with me or with the land first, but we're still here, still in love, and have seven dogs. Yep, we're those people.
I'm a geology professor at a local junior college, and honestly can't imagine a better job. Well, except for being a housewife. But if I have to leave my little rural sanctuary, I'm the luckiest woman on earth that I get to make my living talking to young people about something that interests me. I'm looking forward to starting my PhD this summer, because I just can't sit still.
We are Roman Catholic, a confession which around here is likely to lead to confusion and pamphlets regarding our eternal torment. I don't blame non-Catholics for misunderstanding this church. I grew up Protestant and after avoiding the large Catholic church near campus for my first three years of college, it suddenly occurred that I had never actually spoken to a Catholic about their beliefs. Turned out... nearly everything I had been told was incorrect. So, perhaps I can use this blog to clear up some misinformation I learned as a girl and that many folks I speak to are still receiving. (Spoiler alert: we don't worship Mary, saints, or the Pope.)
Also, we like to eat. I love to cook, my husband loves to grill, and that alone is what gets me up and to the gym (gym = farm to market road with wide shoulders) on a regular basis. Right after graduating, as I was looking for a full-time teaching gig, I made ends meet as a cake decorator. I'll share some of my favorite recipes and decorating ideas as time goes on.
